John A. Wasserstrom received his PhD in pharmacology from the State University of New York, Upstate Medical University, with a thesis titled: "The Cardiac Actions of Digitalis and Its Possible Mechanisms of Action".  He completed a postdoctoral fellowship from 1978-1980 with Drs. Gregory Ferrier and Gordon Moe at the Masonic Medical Research Laboratory. Afterward, he performed additional postdoctoral work at the University of Chicago with Dr. Harry Fozzard, where he worked as a research associate (assistant professor) in the Division of Cardiology. In 1987, he joined the faculty and became assistant professor of medicine (cardiology) at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Dr. Wasserstrom is now an associate professor.

His research interests focus on heterogeneity of Ca2+ cycling in individual myocytes of intact heart using fluorescence imaging techniques and confocal microscopy to measure intracellular Ca2+ in whole heart. Current studies include the role of Ca2+ cycling in arrhythmias in normal and failing heart, alterations in Ca2+ dynamics in pharmacologically-induced Long QT Syndrome, and gender differences in intracellular Ca2+ dynamics. Another investigation involves the intracellular and intercellular heterogeneity in distribution patterns of proteins involved in cardiac excitation-contraction coupling.

Dr. Wasserstom actively participates as a member of the Biophysical Society, Cardiac Electrophysiology Society, and the American Heart Association’s Basic Research Council.
